STORYLINE:
China on Tuesday said the arrest of Philippine ex-President Rodrigo Duterte was “an important breaking incident” and was “closely following the developments.”

Duterte was arrested at Manila’s international airport on Tuesday on the orders of the International Criminal Court (ICC) in connection with a case of crime against humanity filed against him, the Philippine government said.

He was arrested after arriving from Hong Kong and police took him into custody on orders of the ICC, which has been investigating the mass killings that happened under the former president’s deadly crackdown against illegal drugs, President Ferdinand Marcos’ office said in a statement.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning commented on the case at a daily briefing in Beijing.

“China always advocates that the International Criminal Court (ICC) should strictly adhere to the principle of complementarity, perform their duties prudently in accordance with law, and avoid politicization and double standards,” she said.
