1. Various of construction crews dismantling Black Lives Matter Plaza
STORYLINE:
Construction crews have begun dismantling the large painting of the words ‘Black Lives Matter’ in Washington, D.C.
The mural is located one block from the White House.
Mayor Bowser ordered the painting and renamed the intersection Black Lives Matter Plaza as a public act of defiance in June 2020.
It came after days of chaotic protests at that location over police brutality following the killing of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer.
The move comes as Washington’s Democratic Mayor Muriel Bowser struggled to fend off threats of encroachment from President Donald Trump and the Republican-controlled Congress.
Republicans have repeatedly threatened to revoke DC’s home rule act of 1973 that grants the capital city limited autonomy.
