STORYLINE:
Dozens of Tibetan protesters clashed with police outside the Chinese embassy in New Delhi on Monday, March 10 to mark the 66th Tibetan National Uprising Day.

The protesters belonging to the Tibetan Youth Congress shouted anti-China slogans, carried banners, posters and Tibetan flags were forcibly pushed into vehicles, and taken away by policemen as they tried to enter the high-security complex.

In North India hill town Dharamshala, the seat of the exiled Tibetan government and home of the Dalai Lama, Penpa Tsering the President of the Central Tibetan Administration hoisted the Tibetan National Flag as the national anthems of Tibet and India were played in an official ceremony.

Tibetans carried a foot march across the town after the ceremony.

The 1959 independence uprising was quelled by the Chinese army forcing the Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama and his followers into exile in India.

China claims Tibet has been part of its territory for centuries.

Tibetans say the Himalayan region was virtually independent until China occupied it in 1950.
