STORYLINE:
In Greenland, voters are preparing to head to the polls this week to elect the 31 members of the country’s legislative body, the Inatsisartut.
The main issues in the March 11 vote are expected to be independence from Denmark and their relationship with the U.S. after President Donald Trump made comments about wanting to take over the territory.
A former colony of Denmark, Greenland gained self-rule in 1979 and now runs itself through its parliament.
A treaty with the United States, and a U.S. military base in Greenland, also gives Washington say over the territory’s defence.
Greenland is massive — about one-fifth the size of the United States or three times the size of Texas.
Since taking office six weeks ago, Trump has repeatedly expressed his interest in Greenland, a huge mineral-rich island that sits along strategic sea lanes in the North Atlantic.
Greenland, a self-governing territory of Denmark with a population of about 56,000 people, lies off the northeastern coast of Canada, closer to Washington, D.C., than to Copenhagen
