STORYLINE:
Hundreds of people gathered in downtown Portland, Oregon, on Saturday for one of the many International Women’s Day rallies held across the globe.

Colleen Nakanishi, a co-organizer of the event, said the focus was to stand in solidarity with women locally, nationally and "across our oceans."

"With International Women’s Day, it’s really important to me, and I think all of the folks that are here, to lift up voices who are not usually heard," she said.

People of all ages and genders flocked to the event, cheering and clapping as they donned handmade signs on subjects ranging from feminism to U.S. politics. Speakers spoke about women’s rights, as well as LGBTQ+ rights.

Tanya Duncan, 53, said her frustration with rights being "stripped away" motivated her to attend her very first women’s march.

"This is my first time coming to something like this, and it feels amazing. Exhilarating," she said. "It makes me want to cry."

Oskar Munch, 13, was also among the crowd. He said he was happy to see the large crowd size, but also "disappointed that a protest even needs to happen."

"This shouldn’t be happening in the first place, everyone should already have equal rights," the seventh grader said. "But I’m glad, I’m also glad that people are just here to fight for what’s right."
