STORYLINE:
Female students led street protests against corruption in Serbia on Saturday, marking International Women’s Day and demonstrating against widespread violence targeting women in the Balkan country.

University students in Serbia are leading almost daily protests as part of a nationwide anti-graft movement that started after a concrete canopy crashed down in November at a railway station in the northern city of Novi Sad.

The incident killed 15 people and triggered protests against the populist government of President Aleksandar Vucic.

Many in Serbia believe that the huge concrete construction fell down because of poor renovation work fueled by government corruption.

Demonstrations have become a challenge to the populist government of President Aleksandar Vucic.

The students on Saturday carried banners reading “Women in front rows” at the head of the march, which passed through central streets in Belgrade and continued to the state prosecutor’s office.

The protesters then held 19 minutes of silence instead 15 held otherwise for the victims of the canopy crash.

The additional four minutes were dedicated to the four women killed in domestic violence this year.

Serbia’s university students behind the protests have insisted on full accountability in the canopy fall, which has garnered widespread support among Serbia’s citizens who are largely disillusioned with politicians and have lost trust in state institutions.

Student-led rallies have drawn tens of thousands of people, possibly becoming the largest ever in Serbia which has a long history of anti-government protests.

Populist Vucic has described the protests as a Western-orchestrated ploy to oust him from power.
