STORYLINE:
Thousands of worshipers attended Friday prayers at al-Aqsa compound in the Old City in Jerusalem.
Many had arrived from the West Bank after Israel allowed men over 55 and women over 50 to move from the West Bank to Jerusalem to perform the prayers during Ramadan.
"If the people from the West Bank are permitted to come, they will come from all the cities, villages and camps to pray at al-Aqsa during Ramadan," said Nafez Abu Saker, from Aqraba village near Nablus in the West Bank.
The Old City is located in east Jerusalem, which Israel captured in the 1967 Mideast war and annexed to its capital in a move not recognized internationally.
Since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza October 2023, the Israeli government blocked Palestinians in the West Bank from crossing to Jerusalem or visiting Israel.
A ceasefire has paused the fighting and led to the release of several Israeli hostages abducted in the attack as well as hundreds of Palestinians imprisoned by Israel.
