Vatican – 7 March 2025
1. Various of St. Peter’s Square
2. SOUNDBITE (Italian), Ester Conversano, local resident:
“(Question: How was it to hear the voice of the Pope?) Very moving. It is a tired voice, but in its own, in its effort, it still transmits his hope to us. And the truth also of his suffering."
3. Postcard with Pope Francis’s portrait
4. SOUNDBITE (Italian), David Macek, catholic faithful from Czech republic:
“It was a nice surprise on the one hand, on the other hand you could feel that he was really sick, because I listen to his voice every day. I listen to his comments on the gospels. I also listen to his voice in Spanish at the general audience. Then I must admit that he was really sick. Anyway, it’s nice to hear it, even if it hurts in a certain way. Let us pray for him."
5. Postcard of Pope Francis
6. SOUNDBITE (Italian), Alessandro De Carol’s, Vatican employee:
“It was heart-warming. Why? For two reasons. First because it had been so many days since we had not heard him, we had not seen him, so it was nice to hear it back simply because of this. In short, we remembered him during his last audience and then later he had sort of disappeared. The second emotion listening to it was due to the fatigue of his voice, that is, I think personally but also everyone yesterday in the streets and in the world experienced first-hand how much the Pope is suffering right now, how hard he is trying to recover that bit of health that will allow him, as we all hope, to return here to the Vatican and resume his ministry actively, let’s say."

STORYLINE:
Catholic believers expressed their mixed feelings on Friday after hearing the voice of Pope Francis for the first time since he was hospitalised in February.

Francis had offered a first public sign of just how weak he is on Thursday by recording an audio message that was broadcast to the faithful in St. Peter’s Square who had gathered for the nightly recitation of the rosary prayer.

The Vatican said the 88-year-old pope had a good night’s rest and woke up Friday morning just after 8 a.m.

Doctors said they didn’t expect to give another medical update until Saturday, given his continued stability and absence of respiratory crises or other setbacks for several days now.
