"Since a long time ago, we have had a batch, several batches of volunteers under the umbrella of the United States Peace Corps in this country, so all of a sudden, President Trump cannot claim not to know about that kind of situation. Some of them have stayed in this country. They have enjoyed staying here and when their tenure ends, they don’t even want to go back. Some of them say we are married here and we don’t want to go back to the U.S. We want to now become citizens of this country."

STORYLINE:
The Lesotho government has raised its concerns about U.S. President Donald Trump’s comments that nobody has heard of the country through diplomatic channels, it said on Thursday.

"When somebody as high-powered as President Trump denies us in such a high-profile setup, it is understandable we would have to do something," said Thabo Sekonyela, Lesotho Government spokesperson.

Trump mocked Lesotho while criticizing some U.S. foreign aid contracts as a waste of money in his 99-minute speech to Congress on Tuesday.

“Eight million dollars to promote LGBTQI+ in the African nation of Lesotho, which nobody has ever heard of,” Trump said, struggling to pronounce the name correctly as Vice President JD Vance and House Speaker Mike Johnson, sitting behind him, grinned.

But Musk in September was meeting with Lesotho’s Prime Minister Sam Matekane while trying to do business with the southern African nation.

Musk’s Starlink internet satellite service, a subsidiary of SpaceX, has applied for a license to operate in Lesotho. It’s one of several African countries where it is bidding to win contracts. The Lesotho Communications Authority said last month it recently received Starlink’s bid for a 10-year license.

Musk was born in South Africa, which surrounds Lesotho and its 2.3 million people.
