“China firmly opposes the groundless accusation made by the U.S. and urges the U.S. to immediately stop its wrongdoing of abusing sanctions. In December 2024, Chinese cybersecurity agencies exposed the latest two cases of US intelligence agencies launching cyber attacks against Chinese high-tech companies. The U.S. is the No.1 hacking state in the world, and its practice reflects hypocritical double standards and is a typical move of a thief crying "stop thief.””

5. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Lin Jian, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson:
“The relevant U.S. official’s remarks deliberately incited ideological confrontation and hyped up the China threat. We urge the U.S. side not to project its hegemonic thinking onto China, not to see China-U.S. relations with an outdated Cold War mindset, and not to curb or suppress China in the name of strategic competition.”

“China has a clear and consistent position. Whatever kind of war it is – a tariff war, a trade war, a cold war, or a hot war – it should not be fought and cannot be won.”

STORYLINE:
China on Thursday expressed opposition to the U.S. indictment of 12 Chinese nationals accused of involvement in global cybercrime campaigns targeting dissidents, news organizations, U.S. agencies and universities.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, the suspects include mercenary hackers, law enforcement officers, and employees of a private hacking firm.
A set of criminal cases filed in New York and Washington add new detail to what U.S. officials say is a booming hacking-for-hire ecosystem in China, in which private companies and contractors are paid by the Chinese government to target victims of particular interest to Beijing.
The arrangement is meant to provide Chinese state security forces cover and deniability.
“China firmly opposes the groundless accusation made by the U.S. and urges the U.S. to immediately stop its wrongdoing of abusing sanctions,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said when asked about the indictment at a daily news briefing.
“The U.S. is the No.1 hacking state in the world, and its practice reflects hypocritical double standards and is a typical move of a thief crying "stop thief,” Lin added.
Over the past two decades, Chinese state security’s demand for overseas intelligence has soared, giving rise to a vast network of these private hackers-for-hire companies that have infiltrated hundreds of systems outside China.
Separately, Lin denounced U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s statement that the U.S. is “prepared” to go to war with China following Beijing’s warning over escalating trade tensions.
“The relevant U.S. official’s remarks deliberately incited ideological confrontation and hyped up the China threat,” said Lin.
In its sharp criticisms of the extra tariffs that President Donald Trump imposed on Chinese imports citing the fentanyl issue, China’s Foreign Ministry has repeatedly warned that it is ready for any kind of war with the U.S., whether a trade war or a tariff war.
