(12 Apr 1976) In two parts – z067887 + z067887a
April 30th 1976 is the first anniversary of the end of the
war in Vietnam. In the past year, the new regime in
Saigon has set about transforming society by indoctrinating
virtually every individual in the country at
special "re-education" centres. The south has also
been given a new political system of committees that
reaches down to street level. Drug addiction, prostitution
and other social problems of Saigon are being
tackled and rapid progress is being made towards
political re-unification of North and South Vietnam.
Half a million people have been moved out of Saigon
to new economic zones in rural areas, where agricultural
development is supervised by teams of Communist cadres.
