"Greenland is a very independent with the help of Denmark, and honestly, we have our own living resources. If we were to become a part of the USA, a lot of our living resources would shorten and we wouldn’t get us much money than we’re getting from our fishing. It would increase a lot and then we might get a lot of inflation doing so. Then he might add a lot of taxes here which would also increase the homelessness here. We feel like it’s a bad idea and we just more want to be our little island that’s more independent than anything else."

STORYLINE:
Greenlanders had mixed reactions to a message from U.S. President Donald Trump, who said his administration supported the Arctic island’s right of self-determination — but added that the United States will acquire the territory "one way or another."

Greenlandic Prime Minister Múte Bourup Egede declared Wednesday that "Greenland is ours", saying the island’s citizens are neither American nor Danish because they are Greenlandic.

The United States needs to understand that, he wrote in a post in Greenlandic and Danish on Facebook.

The future of Greenland will be decided by its people, he wrote.

His post came hours after Trump made a direct appeal to Greenlanders in a speech to Congress on Tuesday, a week before islanders head to the polls for parliamentary elections.

Many in Greenland, a vast and mineral-rich island that is a semiautonomous territory of Denmark, are worried and offended by Trump’s threats to seize control of homeland.

Lisa Aardestrup, 18-year-old resident in Nuuk, said it is "a bad idea" to be a part of the U.S.

"We just more want to be like our little island that’s more independent than anything else."

Another resident, Yulao Sandkreen, said he likes Trump and welcomed his comments.

"We need help, no more Danish, no more everything."

Campaign by political parties are underway in Nuuk as Greenlanders will head to the polls Tuesday.

Trump’s recent comments about taking over the island have ignited unprecedented interest in full independence from Denmark, which has become a key issue during campaign season.
