STORYLINE:
A large portrait of Pope Francis was displayed under the windows of the Papal suite at the Gemelli Hospital in Rome on Wednesday.
The oil on canvas work was painted by Mexican artist Roberto Marquez. He wanted to show the closeness of the Mexican people to the Pontiff while he was still hospitalized recovering from double pneumonia.
The John Paul II statue, which lies under the windows of the suite where Francis is receiving medical care, became the venue where the faithful gather to pray and light candles for the Pontiff’s recovery.
Pope Francis was resting on Wednesday morning after sleeping through the night with a ventilation mask as he undergoes hospital treatment for double pneumonia.
In its latest update, the Vatican said the pope rested well overnight and woke up shortly after 8 a.m.
Pope Francis remains in stable condition, with a guarded prognosis, meaning he was not out of danger.
The 88-year-old pope, who has chronic lung disease and had part of one lung removed as a young man, had two respiratory crises on Monday in a setback to his recovery.
On Tuesday, he was breathing with just the help of supplemental oxygen after respiratory crises a day earlier.
