Germany’s Green party blocks debt reforms by likely new Government coalition | DW News

Germany’s Green party say they will not support debt reforms proposed by the conservatives and the Social Democrats, potentially sinking their new government before its even been formed.

Conservative leader and likely next chancellor Friedrich Merz said last week that he wants to loosen debt rules to allow higher defense and infrastructure spending. But that would require constitutional changes, making support from Green lawmakers as well as Merz’s prospective Social Democratic coalition partners necessary. Green co-leader Felix Banaszak said the party would put forward its own defense proposal.
