"The Federal Chancellor has repeatedly made it clear that security, the transatlantic alliance, has ensured more than 75 years of security in Europe and also in the transatlantic region. It has proved its worth. It is a pillar of our security, but it is also a pillar of US and Canadian security. And the tried and tested should be retained wherever possible. And I believe that, despite individual irritations that may have arisen in recent weeks, there is not a shadow of a doubt in NATO’s mind about the United States’ membership of NATO. And in this respect, this continues to be the framework within which we organize our security together. And at the same time, we are strengthening the European pillar of NATO. This is also in the interests of the United States of America. “

6. SOUNDBITE (German) Sebastian Fischer, spokesman for the German Foreign Ministry:
"We have already spoken out about Greenland on several occasions and have also made our position on international law clear. And the fact is that borders must never be changed by force. That is very clear. Greenland is part of Denmark as an autonomous territory and I would leave it at that. Greenlanders do decide their own fate. If I remember correctly, the American president said the same thing in his speech."

STORYLINE:
Germany on Wednesday said the NATO alliance had "proved its worth" and been a pillar of security over more than 75 years.
Steffen Hebestreit, a spokesman for the German government, made the comment at a news conference in Berlin.
"And I believe that, despite individual irritations that may have arisen in recent weeks, there is not a shadow of a doubt in NATO’s mind about the United States’ membership of NATO. And in this respect, this continues to be the framework within which we organize our security together," he said.
Sebastian Fischer, spokesman for the German Foreign Ministry, said at the same news conference that Greenland’s "borders must never be changed by force."
His comments come as U.S. President Donald Trump, in a speech to Congress, said the United States will acquire the territory “one way or another” even though his administration supports the Arctic island’s right of self-determination.
"Greenland is part of Denmark as an autonomous territory and I would leave it at that," said Fischer. "If I remember correctly, the American president said the same thing in his speech.“
