“And it is important that the story is always told with the truth, and never confuse the aggressor Russia with the victim Ukraine. This is important for us, not because of a question of who one aligns oneself circumstantially. Where is Chile’s position? Chile’s position is with international law and the unrestricted respect for human rights.”

4. SOUNDBITE (German) Frank Walter Steinmeier, President of Germany:
“We are in a time of global upheaval and terrible wars in the Middle East, also in Europe, in Ukraine. We are confronted with a new U.S. administration that has committed itself to a completely different world view. In this time of global change, we want to deepen relationships with countries that act multilaterally and abide by internationally agreed rules. President Boric and I discussed foreign policy challenges today. Mr. President, I am very, very grateful to you for the clear position you have taken on Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, not only in the past, but for upholding this position resolutely.”

7. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Gabriel Boric, President of Chile:
“This Monday we announced the details of the plan to expropriate part of the land in “Villa Baviera” which includes the house of Paul Schäfer (deceased Nazi cult leader in Chile), the hospital of the colony and the graves where evidence of burials and exhumations of victims of forced disappearance were found. This is a historic step that should have been taken earlier, but we are fulfilling it, since together with the work of both States, one of the darkest places of repression in our country will become a site of memory and reflection.”

STORYLINE:
Chile and Germany on Wednesday reaffirmed their commitment to multilateralism and defended the strengthening of relations with countries that promote free trade and ‘abide by international rules’.
"It is important that the story is always told with the truth, and never confuse the aggressor Russia with the victim Ukraine," Chilean President Gabriel Boric told a press conference after meeting with his German counterpart Frank-Walter Steinmeier at La Moneda Palace in Santiago.
Although he did not directly quote U.S. President Donald Trump, Boric said his country views ‘with concern the threats that loom over Panama, Canada, Greenland, Denmark’s territory’, alluding to Trump’s recent statements and actions on his aspirations for US foreign policy.
In recent days Trump announced the imposition of tariffs on products from Canada, Mexico and China, reaffirmed his interest in buying Greenland – belonging to Denmark – and insisted on taking back control of the Panama Canal, which has generated diplomatic friction.
In the same vein, the German president told journalists that his country would seek to deepen its relations with like-minded nations in order to join forces in a ‘time in which the world order, multilateralism and the United Nations itself are being called into question’.
