4. SOUNDBITE (Ukrainian) Denys Shmyhal, Ukrainian Prime Minister
"I am convinced that this will serve as an element of Ukraine’s economic growth. It will also be an element of Ukraine’s protection by the United States. Of course, we need and are requesting concrete security guarantees not only from the United States but also from Europe and the G7 countries."
STORYLINE:
Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said that as of Monday evening US aid was still incoming, and that he has no information to suggest it actually stopping, despite the Trump administration’s announcement that it would halt all military aid.
"All the aid included in the packages from the previous U.S. administration has been arriving in Ukraine, and as of last night (Monday), I have no information indicating that anything has been halted," said Shmyhal at a media briefing on Tuesday.
He also commented on Ukraine’s readiness to sign the minerals deal as long as it included "concrete security guarantees not only from the United States but also from Europe and the G7 countries."
U.S. President Donald Trump’s move comes just days after a disastrous Oval Office meeting in which Trump and Vice President JD Vance tore into Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for what they perceived as insufficient gratitude for the more than $180 billion U.S. has appropriated for military aid and other assistance to Kyiv since the start of Russia’s invasion on Feb. 24, 2022.
A White House official said Trump is focused on reaching a peace deal and wants Zelenskyy “committed” to that goal. The official added that the U.S. was “pausing and reviewing” its aid to "ensure that it is contributing to a solution.” The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the assistance.
The order will remain in effect until Trump determines that Ukraine has demonstrated a commitment to peace negotiations with Russia, the official said.
