(26 Nov 1970) RR7047A THE PHILIPPINES POPE PAUL VI WILL AND WON’T SEE
On November 27th 1970 Pope Paul VI leaves the Vatican on an 8-day 6-nation tour of Asia and Australia. His first stop, apart from a brief overnight halt in Teheran, will be in the Philippines – Asia’s only Christian country. It’s a land with many problems, including a staggering crime rate, one of the world’s highest birth rates and a huge gulf between the very rich and the very poor. This Report includes remarkable film of the "Penitentes" – fanatical Catholics who whip themselves into bloody unconsciousness; it shows the rich Manila suburb of Makati, with some of the finest and most expensive homes in Asia, and the ramshackle slums of the Tondo area. We accompanied Manila police on a sortie and filmed an actual arrest, as well as a marine police search for gun-runners in Manila Bay. Inside Manila’s notorious Bilibid prison, we filmed condemned prisoners in
Death Row, and a non-lethal demonstration of the electric chair. Also shown are government troops operating against the "Huks", the left-wing guerrilla nationalists of Central Luzon. Agriculture is covered by harvesting of coconuts and rice. The vitally important American presence is shown by coverage at the massive Clark Air Base.
