2. SOUNDBITE (Russian) Dmitry Peskov, spokesman for Russian President Vladimir Putin:
"Of course, details are yet to be learned, but if it’s true, it’s a decision that indeed could push the Kyiv regime toward a peace process. We are seeing that some European nations are saying that they will continue to provide comprehensive support so they will try to somehow compensate for the missing volumes of munitions and the rest. However, the main volumes of supplies so far have come from the U.S. and via U.S. channels. It is obvious that the U.S. has been the chief supplier in this war so far. If the U.S. suspends these supplies, it will make the best contribution to peace.”
STORYLINE:
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov on Tuesday said the U.S. decision to suspend military aid to Ukraine "will make the best contribution to peace."
Speaking with reporters in Moscow, Peskov was asked about the U.S. decision to suspend military aid to Ukraine.
He said that “details are yet to be learned, but if it’s true it’s a decision that indeed could push the Kyiv regime toward a peace process.”
Peskov told reporters that Washington’s decision could act as a spur to a peace agreement.
“The U.S. has been the chief supplier in this war so far,” Peskov said.
Russia will likely try to use the halt in supplies to extend its territorial gains and strengthen its position in prospective peace talks.
Days after an explosive meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, U.S. President Donald Trump ordered the assistance halted in a bid to pressure Kyiv to engage in peace talks with Russia.
A White House official said the U.S. was “pausing and reviewing” its aid to “ensure that it is contributing to a solution.”
The order will remain in effect until Trump determines that Ukraine has demonstrated a commitment to peace negotiations with Russia, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the assistance.
