STORYLINE:
A group of Argentinian nationals, accompanied by their ambassador, prayed for the health of Pope Francis under the windows of his suite at the Gemelli hospital in Rome on Tuesday.
The prayer was led by the dean of the catholic Argentinian church of Rome, father Fernando Laguna.
The south-American delegation brought a small statue of the Argentinian patron saint, Our Lady of Lujàn, under the windows of the Pope and prayed for almost 30 minutes.
At the end of the prayer Laguna shouted "Long live Pope Francis", followed by a timid applause.
The Vatican says that Pope Francis has stabilized enough after two respiratory crises to resume using a nasal tube for oxygen, rather than a ventilation mask.
The 88-year-old pope has pneumonia and had part of one lung removed as a young man.
The Vatican said he woke up Tuesday after sleeping through the night.
The fact that Francis no longer needed the mask by Tuesday morning was a sign of some improvement after crises that required doctors to extract “copious” amounts of mucus from his lungs.
But the doctors’ prognosis remained guarded, meaning he was not out of danger.
