"The first year we created a bead that was a stiletto shoe and it was just to be a commemorative bead but it took off. People love shoes, who knew? People loved a high heel shoe and the very first year one of our members decorated a few shoes in homage to Zulu coconuts and that just spread organically through the crew and other people started doing it and then everybody started doing it and people love glittered shoe."

"Well, really we were trying to get 350 members in the beginning and the first year we rode with over 600, so it’s always been a great surprise year after year that so many people wanted to be a part of it and it’s been an even greater surprise to see so many people on the streets excited to see us coming."

Mardi Gras in New Orleans is the largest and best-known Carnival celebration in the U.S.
Amid all boisterous parades and revelry, a group of women has become famous for their fabulous, custom-made shoes that they hand out to members of the public.
STORYLINE
New Orleans prepares for its signature event, Mardi Gras.
However, there more to it than just colorful beads and drunken revelry
A group of women is making sparkly shoes a part of the Carnival ritual.
The Krewe of Muses has become famous for their custom-made, bedazzled shoes that members hand out during the parade.
Virginia Saussy has ridden in the parade since the Muses’ inception in 2000 and says they are proud of the ‘Shoe-volution’.
"One of our members decorated a few shoes in homage to Zulu coconuts and that just spread organically through the crew."
Since Hurricane Katrina, it’s now become a year-round bonding experience for her and the other Muses.
Meanwhile, Eugenie Suggs has all but perfected the art of making a glittery masterpiece.
"It’s pure therapy," she says.
"It’s what everybody wants," she says,.
"It challenges us every year to go bigger and better."
