4. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Emad Abu Ramouz, 50, released prisoner:
"Imagine that this is the first time that someone is offering me something to eat with their hand — my mother feeding me with her hand, my father feeding me with his hand. That took me back in time 21 years. Some might see these as simple things, but they are not. It brought me back 21 years to how we lived before prison, to this love and affection. As I said, Ramadan is not about food, drinks and sweets. Ramadan is about the company, the gathering. The gathering with (my family) was beautiful. Meeting with the youth and people in the neighborhood was (also special), even though I didn’t walk much through it. The people were happy, they are happy with us and we were happy with them, thank God."

7. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Emad Abu Ramouz, 50, released prisoner:
"This feeling is indescribable, 21 years in the prisons of the Israeli occupation. No matter what resources and materials are available to you inside, life outside is different. Inside the prison, we talked a lot about Ramadan, holidays and special occasions. We often pressured the prison administration to get certain privileges. But no matter what is available to you in prison, it remains a prison. Nothing inside can compare to the moment I experienced today during the reunion with my brothers, my mother and my father — being in their presence."

11. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Emad Abu Ramouz, 50, released prisoner:
"First of all, the insults, the humiliation, the beatings and the swearing — that’s an issue on its own. And then there’s the issue of the food and you could write books about it. The food we ate was inedible. It is impossible for a human being to eat it, impossible. But if we didn’t eat, we would have died. We had to eat it. That’s one issue. The second issue is the quantity of food they gave us. For example, three spoonfuls of beans for lunch and five spoonfuls of rice, what are you supposed to do with that?"

13. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Emad Abu Ramouz, 50, released prisoner:
"After October 7 (Hamas’ attack on southern Israel), out of revenge, they would tie us up for two or three days — not for two or three hours. You’d be tied up for two, three, four or even five days. We would go a week at least without a mattress or a blanket, sleeping on the floor or on iron. The blindfolding started from the first day of the war and continued until the moment I left prison, until the last moment. We were not allowed to raise our heads while we were blindfolded. Even if we moved just two meters, our eyes were covered. Moving from room to room and from section to section, we were blindfolded. Going to the clinic or to the post office, our hands and feet were cuffed, and we were blindfolded."
