(5 Apr 1970) Naples, largest city in Southern Italy, is built on unstable ground Periodically, pavements crack open, roads split and drop, causing deaths and injuries. Parts of the city are sinking, but in nearby Pozzuoli it is rising so rapidly that last month a large scale evacuation was ordered. Brooding over all, the still active Vesuvius volcano, where archaeologists are still discovering fresh evidence of the destruction of Pompei, 900 years ago. Another great Italian city, Venice, is sinking as the sea-level rises. Together with atmospheric pollution and the wash of many motor-boats, it’s a major threat to the city and its treasures.
