STORYLINE:
The Associated Press correspondent David Biller takes viewers to both sides of the world’s biggest party in Rio de Janeiro, experiencing the street parties and Carnival parades in the Sambadrome.
The Amigos da Onça (Friends of the Jaguar) street carnival party, is one of the nearly 500 street parties roving through Rio, each with its own aesthetic, theme or musical style.
They can have thousands, or even hundreds of thousands, of revelers.
These parties are the spot to zip up a zany costume and seize your main-character moment, or show some skin then cover it with glitter.
Hand the reins to your wild inner child. Get silly with strangers.
When you’re in the middle of it, the rest of the universe fades away. Never mind the wars or political turmoil.
Forget rising prices, strained relationships. Instead, embrace euphoria.
Beyond the city-sanctioned street parties, there are dozens more informal blocos, and I play in one of them, “Besame Mucho” (Kiss me a lot) features music from all over Latin America while parading through the Santa Teresa neighborhood.
At night, the Sambadrome is the main event.
The be-all, end-all, where dreams come true. It’s the 700-meter avenue where samba schools compete for who can put on the best parade.
The schools are based in working-class communities known as favelas that are often overlooked or looked-down upon.
This is their one shot each year to claim the spotlight on the national stage, get recognition and, maybe even glory.
They pound the drums, sing their hearts out and samba until their feet hurt.
