STORYLINE:
Pop star Chappell Roan had a packed crowd at the Elton John Oscars after party jumping and dancing as she shared the stage with John Sunday night.
Wearing a bedazzled pink cowboy hat Roan gifted him onstage, John sang two duets with the recent Grammy winner, including John’s “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me,” and Roan’s hit “Pink Pony Club.”
Roan was the main attraction at the 33rd annual event, a fundraiser supporting the Elton John AIDS Foundation’s efforts to end new cases of HIV and AIDS.
John and his husband David Furnish hosted the party, which started with a dinner and viewing of the Oscars telecast, before morphing into a cocktail after party and concert.
Singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile was sitting with John during the party, after the two lost the Oscar for best song for their collaboration with Bernie Taupin and Andrew Watt for “Never Too Late” from the documentary, “Elton John: Never Too Late.” (A song called “El Mal” from “Emilia Perez” won the best song Academy Award Sunday night.)
Big white tents stretched across an area of West Hollywood Park and giant disco balls spun slowly over tequila bars as celebrities — including NSYNC members Lance Bass and J.C. Chasez, actors Walton Goggins and Stephanie Hsu, and Golden Globes host and comedian Nikki Glaser–mingled.
The crowd later migrated to a larger ballroom where Roan played an animated set of her hits, including “Good Luck, Babe,” and “ Hot To Go,” as “Shrinking” stars Michael Urie and Lukita Maxwell bobbed their heads and danced in the crowd. Another highlight was Roan admitting she was nervous before covering John’s “ Your Song,” in front of him.
Actor Brianne Howey, who recently starred in the Netflix film, “Kinda Pregnant,” called the concert “epic.”
“It’s one of the most fabulous parties of the year,” Howey told The Associated Press. “Elton John is an icon and a legend and he’s done so much for the world.”
