1. Various of Banksy’s Crude Oil painting on display in Sotheby’s auction house in London. On display with the painting is a mock display of vinyl ‘black paint’ with large cylinders marked with toxic labels
2. Various of Mackie Hayden-Cook, Specialist at Sotheby’s, admiring painting
3. SOUNDBITE (English) Mackie Hayden-Cook, Specialist at Sotheby’s:
"This is Crude Oil Vettriano by Banksy. It is a masterpiece from Banksy’s practice. It is a highly sought after crude oil painting which was first exhibited in the landmark exhibition Crude Oils in Notting Hill in 2005 and what we see here is typically Banksy. He’s scalding the art world with dark humour and irony and speaking to prevalent issues such as globalisation and environmentalism which really resonates with the public consciousness."
4. Wide pan of painting
5. Various closes of painting showing two men in hazmat suits wheeling a barrel of toxic waste
6. Tilt up of painting showing a couple dancing on a windswept beach with an attendant butler serenading them
7. SOUNDBITE (English) Mackie Hayden-Cook, Specialist at Sotheby’s:
"You can see two men in hazmat suits stuffing a bird into an oil barrel as a sinking oil liner disappears into the distance. The couple, they continue dancing, possibly unaware of their surroundings, or perhaps deciding to turn away. This is a riff on Jack Vettriano’s ‘The Singing Butler’, which was painted in 1992, and Sotheby’s actually sold that painting in 2004. A year later, Banksy exhibited this remix in his exhibition in Westbourne Grove and this was at a time when Vettriano was popular, but his popularity rested on reproductions of his paintings."
8. Various of Estelle Lovatt, arti critic, observing painting
9. SOUNDBITE (English) Estelle Lovatt, art critic:
"So, when I first saw this painting, my heart leapt because you’re not just buying a Banksy who’s loved over in Hollywood from Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Keanu Reeves, but you’re also buying Vettriano and the original painting that he did make a record sale when it was sold at auction. So, you’re buying the two artists combined, but what makes it really interesting is that both in their own separate ways have been ousted, sort of rejected by the art world, and yet they still hold their own mark for various reasons."
10. Various closes of brush strokes on painting canvas
11. Close pan of Banksy’s signature in corner of painting
12. Various of large toxic oil cylinders part of the Sotheby’s painting display
13. SOUNDBITE (English) Estelle Lovatt, art critic:
"He’s never going to grow old. He’s never going to grow tireless. He’s always going to give us questions and he brings people together almost like the pied piper of the art world, never mind a superhero or a vigilante, he’s like the saviour of the art world, he’s come, the messiah has come in this form to teach us through a paint brush, who knew? Everything goes through the top end of a paint brush, and it all comes out through the bristles. All the answers are there. We’re ruining the planet."
