STORYLINE:
Muslims in Pakistan broke their fasts on Sunday, the first day of Ramadan.
At Karachi’s Memon Masjid mosque hundreds were handed out the fast-breaking evening meal, Iftar.
“Right now almost everywhere in Karachi, people are arranging food items for the poor and the travellers,” said Fahad Yaseen, one of the organisers of the Iftar food handout at Memon Masjid.
“There are many philanthropists who do this every year in Ramadan. Here in Memon Masjid we organise Iftar for 2,200 to 2,500 in the first ten days and for the next 20 days we arrange Iftar for 3,000 to 3,500 people,” he added.
Before sunset, shops selling food items were swarmed with shoppers preparing to break their fast.
Muslims see Ramadan as a time of religious reflection and worship, charity, and community, as they fast from sunrise until sunset.
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar; the month cycles through the seasons.
The start of the month traditionally depends on the sighting of the crescent moon.
The actual start date may vary among Muslim communities due to declarations by multiple Islamic authorities around the globe on whether the crescent has been sighted or different methodologies used to determine the start of the month.
