“We were working on prevention of malnutrition and also working on food security. So that project was funded by USAID, we received the stop work order on 31st January, I think, asking us to suspend activities and in the following days we received a communication for the consortium lead asking all the partners to shut down activities totally and cut salaries from 15th February.`’

“As of yesterday, I think, the communication of the total closure of the project was done. So it means that we have around 13,000 beneficiaries that were assisted by our project that will not receive nutrition coaching anymore, that will not be able neither to get the food assistance that we were supposed to provide to them. So, and it is also 21 of our colleagues that we had to terminate the contract on 15th February.”

STORYLINE:
USAID cuts are hitting especially hard in Haiti, the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere which is struggling with a surge in hunger, gang violence, malnutrition and diseases including cholera.

Haiti depends greatly on community health workers that fan out through impoverished, rural areas to provide essential medication, oversee patient treatment as well as offer nutritional programs and vaccination campaigns.

Late last year, a new report found that nearly 6,000 people across Haiti are starving, with nearly half the country’s population of more than 11 million experiencing crisis levels of hunger or worse, according to the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification.

In addition, more than half of all health facilities across Haiti have closed because of gang violence, with only 28% of them still fully operational, according to the U.N.

The USAID cuts come as demand for health care and other services in Haiti’s rural regions surges as gang violence in the Port-au-Prince capital forces hundreds of thousands of people to seek shelter in the countryside.

A recent internal survey launched by nonprofits across Haiti found that USAID cuts will affect at least 550,000 people who were receiving aid and force organizations to cut 245 staff positions.

Among those affected is Action Against Hunger, which had to cut a nutrition and feeding programme that served 13,000 people in Haiti’s rural northeast and southern regions.

“It was a big hit,” said Martine Villeneuve, the organization’s country director.

The positions of 27 staff members also were cut, she said.

The five-year programme was entering its fourth year, and the nonprofit was preparing to launch what Villeneuve said were “emergency, life-saving projects” aimed at helping another 750,000 people when the cuts occurred
