STORYLINE:
Patients of the Nise da Silveira Mental Health Institute Thursday participated in the traditional Carnival street party ‘Suburban Madness’ in Rio de Janeiro.
The event celebrates the group’s 25th anniversary, promoting the inclusion of patients in the community and families while fighting against prejudice toward mental health.
"Each year, I notice that the mix grows even bigger. No one knows who is who, and that’s exactly how Carnival should be. We all have our madness, we all share the joy of Carnival and samba," said Erica Ponte e Silva, director of the Nise da Silveira Mental Health Institute.
The ‘Suburban Madness’ celebration is the result of work by patients, staff, and families, who take part in music, costume, and accessory workshops, serving as occupational therapy for the patients.
This year’s theme tells the story of mental health and its role in society over the years.
