STORYLINE:
Venezuela’s president Nicolás Maduro appeared on a rally with supporters in Caracas o0n Thursday, a day after the U.S. government announced the termination of a financial lifeline for Venezuela’s government by ending the permits to export oil to the U.S..
The permit that allowed energy giant Chevron Corp. to pump and export Venezuelan oil is then planned to be terminated this week.
President Donald Trump announced the move Wednesday, ending what became a financial lifeline for the South American country.
On Thursday, Maduro greeted supporters who marched to the presidential palace and, without mentioning Donald Trump nor the United States government, said he didn’t forsee a good future for those who want to "massacre the people with their violence and economic warfare."
Trump’s announcement in his Truth Social network accused the government of President Nicolás Maduro of not meeting democratic conditions for last year’s July presidential election as well as of not moving fast enough to transport back to Venezuela immigrants set for deportation.
Venezuela’s political opposition has estimated that Maduro’s government has received about $4 billion through the permit.
If they do not know us, let them try to know us", said Maduro to supporters. "In good times, we are very good; but in bad times we are fearsome warriors.”
Trump’s post did not specifically mention California-based Chevron nor the permit, formally known as a general license, that exempts the company from economic sanctions and allows it to export and sale Venezuelan oil in the U.S.
But it is the only Venezuela-related license whose issuance and renewal information match the dates Trump did mention in his social media post.
