"They’re very angry and they’re very upset because the reason that they’re giving them is that they’re being terminated same day with no notice and being locked out of their computers, by the end of the day, due to poor performance, when in fact they do not have poor performance. They have excellent performance. They have outstanding performances. A lot of them are disabled veterans. That’s not supposed to happen. They’re supposed to have veteran’s preference in a reduction in force, but their records are not correct during onboarding. So because their records are not correct, they are being fired illegally from the VA hospitals. So they’re not doing their due diligence to analyze and see what the impact is going to be on the organization or the departments overall. They’re not checking the performance ratings of any of these employees. They’re just saying goodbye. We want you gone."

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Luz Fuller, President, Local Union President, American Federation of Government Employees:
"As soon as I saw the emails and I saw that there was no name on the emails that were going out from the HR, OPM, dot gov account, I knew that there was zero accountability. It looked like a phishing email. They were just fishing around to see who would respond, and I knew that it wasn’t following the proper channels in order to do a reduction in force or, you know, terminations according to federal regulations. So I immediately knew that it was incorrect. We just had to wait for everything to play out. And for, you know, what took place across the nation, thousands and thousands of households and families and federal employees and veterans to get to the judge. And his ruling was fair, and it was right. And I can’t wait for these people to get their jobs back."

STORYLINE:
A federal judge in San Francisco found that the mass firings of probationary employees were likely unlawful, granting some temporary relief to a coalition of labor unions and organizations that has sued to stop the Trump administration’s massive trimming of the federal workforce.

U.S. District Judge William Alsup ordered the Office of Personnel Management to inform certain federal agencies that it had no authority to order the firings of probationary employees, including the Department of Defense.

Alsup handed down the order on a temporary restraining order sought by labor unions and nonprofits in a lawsuit filed by the coalition filed last week.

The complaint filed by five labor unions and five nonprofit organizations is among multiple lawsuits pushing back on the administration’s efforts to vastly shrink the federal workforce, which Trump has called bloated and sloppy.

Thousands of probationary employees have already been fired and his administration is now aiming at career officials with civil service protection.

The plaintiffs say the Office of Personnel Management had no authority to terminate the jobs of probationary workers who generally have less than a year on the job.

They also say the firings were predicated on a lie of poor performance by the workers.

Lawyers for the government say the Office of Personnel Management did not direct the firings, but asked agencies to review and determine whether employees on probation were fit for continued employment.
