(Reporter: “Why was it important for you to honor Black women through hosting this event?)
“I mean, first of all, it was a privilege just to be asked. But I got a mom, I got a sister, I got a daughter, I got a wife, you know, And for me, the substance of who I am comes from the foundation of my mother and everything that she’s gone through and struggled through. And so it’s personal. It’s, you know, it’s a struggle that I know intimately from being on the outside, trying to protect that which protects me, you know? And it’s just I want to acknowledge, because I have been acknowledged and supported by, you know, Black women throughout my entire career. So, again, it’s a privilege to just be here."
(Reporter: “What does it mean for you to have your mom and your sister with you here?)
“I mean, for my mother, everything that she’s gone through I feel like there’s a little bit of acknowledgment, a recognition that everything that she did go through was not for not, nothing was wasted. Everything was worth it and valuable. And I know that she doesn’t see herself the way the rest of the world sees her. I know that she doesn’t fully— my mom can’t see herself the way I see her, right? I see her as the superhero that she is. And, you know, she’s just like, I’m just mom, you know? But she’s amazing. And I hope that events like this — actually, I know events like this help to reinforce her value to herself. Because, I mean, she knows she valuable. But, you know, she’s a superhero, too.”

“It feels amazing because I didn’t really think about it until beautiful people come up to me and tell me all the time, so I’m just happy that I can help people feel seen and loved and tell them to live they damn lives."

STORYLINE:
Cynthia Erivo, Tyra Banks, Issa Rae and other stars attended Essence’s pre-Oscars event in Los Angeles on Thursday.
The annual Black Women in Hollywood celebration was hosted by Aldis Hodge with honorees including Teyana Taylor, Raamla Mohamed and Marla Gibbs.
Hodge, who stars in the Prime Video series "Cross," spoke about the significance of Black women in his life and career.
Other attendees included Tyla, Kyla Pratt, Meagan Good, Jonathan Majors and Skai Jackson. The Black Women in Hollywood show begins streaming 3 March.
