STORYLINE:
Palestinian teenagers detained by Israel and released back to Gaza recounted being mistreated in Israeli detention upon arriving home Thursday.
Many appeared gaunt, but smiling, as they waved to relatives from the buses ferrying them from Israeli detention back to Gaza.
One detainee, Mohammad Abu Sahloul said he was kept constantly bound in detention: “I swear I could not believe that they were removed from my hands. 24 hours. You sleep with your hands and feet tied,” he said.
Sahloul was one of dozens of Palestinian teenagers aged 15-19 and women who were released back to Gaza Thursday. Their scheduled release last weekend was put on hold by Israel, throwing their relatives in Gaza into anguish as they awaited their loved ones. Israel said it held back the release to protest what it said were grotesque ceremonies put on by Hamas for hostage releases.
Rights groups say that Israel has badly mistreated Palestinians in military detention after pulling them in during large-scale arrest raids in Gaza. They allege that detainees have been tortured, beaten frequently, deprived of adequate and food and water, and held blindfolded and handcuffed.
Nidaa Sahloul, Sahloul’s mother, said she was crying “tears of joy,” upon seeing her son, even though he was unrecognizable.
“They took him with more muscles and weight,” she said. “Mohammad has changed a lot.”
