4. SOUNDBITE (English) Katherine Wells, Lubbock Public Health:
"So a large outbreak, especially of something as contagious as measles, really requires a multifaceted public health response. And those keys to that response are really first communication, trying to get that information out to community members about the risks and what’s going on. Another one is public health follow up identifying cases. Figuring out who might be exposed and making sure those individuals are getting targeted phone calls to let them know they’re at risk. And then the final one with measles, because we have an effective vaccine that can protect individuals from getting measles, is really getting vaccine out into the community and reaching our unvaccinated populations."

"The symptoms, especially in the young children and infants that lead to needing to be in the hospital, are primarily respiratory. So measles certainly causes upper respiratory symptoms, red eyes, congestion, cough, but can cause viral pneumonia and also puts you at risk for a secondary bacterial pneumonia to go along with that."

"Our teams have been doing a great job making sure we have everything we need, everything in place to provide good care for those patients. Unfortunately, like so many viruses, there aren’t any specific treatments for measles. So what we’re doing is providing supportive care, helping support the patients as they hopefully recover from the virus."
