STORYLINE:
New Orleans has the largest and best-known Carnival celebrations in the U.S., with street parties, fancy balls and boisterous parades.
The processions range from neighborhood-based walking clubs to elaborate, high-tech extravaganzas that feature massive floats laden with flashing lights and giant, animated figures.
The Krewe of Muses, an all female krewe, has become famous for their custom-made, bedazzled shoes that krewe members hand out during the parade.
Virginia Saussy has ridden in the parade since the Muses’ inception in 2000 and says they are proud of the ‘Shoe-volution’.
"One of our members decorated a few shoes in homage to Zulu coconuts and that just spread organically through the crew."
Since Hurricane Katrina, it’s now become a year-round bonding experience for her and the other Muses.
Meanwhile, Eugenie Suggs has all but perfected the art of making a glittery masterpiece. "It’s pure therapy."
The Muses parade rolls Thursday night with numerous parades happening throughout the weekend building up to the citywide Mardi Gras day celebration, otherwise known as Fat Tuesday.
