STORYLINE:
Thousands of revelers in fancy dress celebrated in Cologne, Germany, on Thursday as the city marked the start of the carnival season which attracts tourists from around the world.
Dressed in costumes ranging from clowns to kings and even lamp shades, people gathered in the city’s Heumarkt Square and danced to live music as the festivities got underway.
This year, heightened concerns after the recent attack in Munich and elsewhere, have prompted increased security measures.
According to local reports, German police are on alert after Islamic State called for carnival attacks.
The street parties and parades will continue through the weekend until Ash Wednesday (5 March), which marks the beginning of Lent in the Christian calendar.
