STORYLINE:
Israelis were mourning on Thursday after Hamas handed over the remains of four more Israeli hostages in exchange for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners as part of the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
They are the last four to be released during the first phase of the truce, which is set to end Saturday.
Residents gathered at the Tel Aviv plaza known as Hostages’ Square urged the Israeli government to negotiate a deal to release all remaining hostages.
Pictures of Ohad Yahalomi, Itzhak Elgarat, Shlomo Mantzur and Tsachi Idan were played on a large screen in the square.
Mantzur, 85, was killed in the Oct. 7, 2023, attack and his body was taken into Gaza.
The other three were abducted alive and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said they were killed in captivity.
Yahalomi, who held dual French-Israeli citizenship, was 49 when captured.
He was abducted from his home in Kibbutz Nir Oz along with his son, then 12, who was later released.
Elgarat, 68 when kidnapped, was also taken from his home in Nir Oz after telling his brother over the phone that he had been wounded.
He was an Israeli-Danish dual national.
Idan, 49 when kidnapped, was taken from Kibbutz Nahal Oz after his eldest daughter was killed in their home.
The Hostages Forum, an Israeli group representing families of hostages held by Hamas, said that all three had “endured a prolonged period in Hamas captivity in Gaza” and “could have been saved and brought back through an agreement.”
