(22 Apr 1991) BRAZIL/PERU: As a cholera epidemic spreads across South America, Brazil confirms its first two cases in the Amazonian border region with Colombia and are preparing for many more this year. The Peruvian National Commission for Combating Cholera visits the island of Santa Rosa and discovers it to be the source of the cholera epidemic which is spreading to Brazil. The people of the island regularly cross into Brazil for shopping and working the the President of the Commission says strenuous efforts must be made to control the traffic of people across the frontiers to prevent the disease spreading.
