STORYLINE:
Carnival season always breathes life into the local economy of Rio de Janeiro’s Vila Vintém favela – but particularly this year, after its Unidos de Padre Miguel samba school was elevated to the top Carnival league after 57 years, meaning much more money from the city to put on its parade.

For the residents of Vila Vintém, an impoverished area in Rio’s west zone, the samba school has become a support system and refuge, meeting the basic needs of the community.

"When the community is going through a tough time, this is where they come, and we do our best to help," says Lenilson Leal, 58, current president of the school that was founded back in 1957.

He says the support varies from food distribution, to children’s parties, to assistance with funeral expenses.

Carnival also offers a boost in the form of both temporary and permanent jobs for seamstresses, blacksmiths, painters, and artisans who work on costumes and build the floats.

"When Carnival season comes around, the samba school gives opportunities to people who are unemployed, like me," said Luana Borges, 42, a performer and now worker at Unidos de Padre Miguel.

"I was out of work, but now that Carnival is here, I’m working as a decorator," she says.

This year, the samba school pays a tribute to Africa, women and the Afro-Brazilian faith Candomble.
