Let me give you an example: We do not choose to copy producers abroad; instead, we embrace tradition, which has allowed us to create a product featuring marquetry (wood veneer). In this workshop, the marquetry is crafted by hand.”

“They are essential equipment if you are a cigar lover. Cigars are made here in the tropics in countries like Cuba, which is really a natural humidor. It’s humid, it’s warm, it is tropical. You take that cigar and bring it another place, like where I live in the United States, the cigar will immediately dry out. So, a humidor is a beautiful box that mimics the conditions of a place like Cuba – we like to say about 70 degrees F, 70% humidity, so it keeps your cigars safe and sound.”

STORYLINE:
As the cigar festival kicks off in Havana and is expected to raise millions of dollars, one essential piece of equipment for preserving expensive cigars is often overlooked – the humidor.
In general, people talk about cigars, the excellence of the leaves used to make them, the necessary drying process, and the special way in which the cigar is handmade.
However, the boxes in which they are kept and preserved for many years receive little attention, leading artisans to create ever more elaborate designs to attract the attention of aficionados and buyers.
Adrián Morán Lipis’s workshop in Havana is busy preparing for this year’s cigar festival.
Morán and 15 other artisans take pride in crafting humidors using the same techniques as their forefathers.
Just like Cuban cigars, the humidors are handmade using specially selected cedar wood that will not interfere with the taste of the cigars, and using marquetry, which is a technique of applying pieces of veneer to form decorative pattern designs.
“We make the best humidors in Cuba, the country with the best tobacco in the world. That is why we have dedicated all these years to do this type of work. It is a dream: tobacco is a prince, and we make their castle,” says Morán.
In addition to their decorative purpose, humidors help maintain a consistent temperature of 21 degrees Celsius (70°F). If properly cared for, they can keep a cigar fresh for 100 years.
David Savona is the executive editor of a specialized cigar magazine that has been published in the United States since 1992.
Savona explains that cigars made in tropical Cuba will inevitably dry out when transported to other countries.
