STORYLINE:
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov on Tuesday refused to confirm or deny that U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed the deployment of European peacekeepers to Ukraine, saying he had no comment to offer to reporters during his daily conference call.
Trump on Monday said Putin would accept European peacekeepers in Ukraine as part of a potential peace deal.
Shortly after Trump’s comments, Russian state TV aired a short interview with Putin, in which he said that he had not talked with Trump in detail about ending the fighting.
He said that during his phone conversation with Trump and talks between Russian and U.S. officials in Riyadh, "we certainly touched on issues related to the Ukrainian crisis. However, it was not discussed in its essence. We only agreed that we would approach" discussing it.
It wasn’t clear when exactly the interview was recorded.
Peskov on Tuesday also refused to comment on the possible deployment of European peacekeepers to Ukraine and redirected reporters to the Russian Foreign Minister’s recent statements on the subject.
Sergey Lavrov told reporters after the the talks in Riyadh that having European peacekeepers in Ukraine would be "unacceptable" for Moscow — just as Ukraine’s accession to NATO is.
Peskov earlier this month called a possible deployment of European peacekeepers to Ukraine "a very complex issue," given that those forces will come from NATO countries.
