1. SOUNDBITE (English) Rep. Tim Burchett, (R) Tennessee:
“Currently I’m a no. There’s about five of us that are No. I’m not sure why we’re going for this vote right now. I’d love to, the five of us would love to, it seems that we’ve all kind of not been included in some of these discussions, and I think that would be…that would be the optimal thing to do.”
2. SOUNDBITE (English) Rep. Thomas Massie, (R) Kentucky:
“You can’t cut taxes without cutting spending. And they’re not really cutting spending. They’re cutting taxes by 450 billion and cutting spending by 150 billion. That leaves you $300 billion you’re going to add to the deficit compared to the CBO baseline. I know there’s some people don’t want to use the baseline conveniently after 30 years of using the baseline.”

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Rep. Thomas Massie, (R) Kentucky:
“In there, they’re trying to comfort some of the more moderate members and say, oh, no, we’re not doing anything to Medicaid in this bill.”
(Reporter: Now what? That’s probably the big question.)
“I feel like we were elected…who disagrees with work requirements for single, able bodied recipients of Medicaid? Like that’s a 70-30, maybe 90-10 issue in America. And they’re afraid to put that in writing? Give me a break.”

STORYLINE:
Votes are expected Tuesday evening in the US House of Representatives for a Republican budget blueprint.

It’s a step toward delivering President Donald Trump’s “big, beautiful bill” with $4.5 trillion in tax breaks and $2 trillion in spending cuts.

But with Republicans holding a razor thin majority in the House, some Republican holdouts could stop the bill in its tracks.

Rep. Tim Burchett, (R) Tennessee, says he’s currently voting no.

“There’s about five of us that are No. I’m not sure why we’re going for this vote right now. I’d love to, the five of us would love to, it seems that we’ve all kind of not been included in some of these discussions, and I think that would be that that would be the optimal thing to do,” Burchett said.

And Rep. Thomas Massie, (R) Kentucky, says more needs to be done to cut spending in the proposal.

“You can’t cut taxes without cutting spending. And they’re not really cutting spending. They’re cutting taxes by 450 billion and cutting spending by 150 billion. That leaves you $300 billion you’re going to add to the deficit compared to the CBO baseline,” Massie said.

A closed-door meeting was held with House republicans during the day on Tuesday, and Massie said leaders were trying to assuage moderate Republicans by saying there would be no cuts to Medicaid.

“Who disagrees with work requirements for single, able bodied recipients of Medicaid? Like that’s a 70-30, maybe 90-10 issue in America. And they’re afraid to put that in writing? Give me a break,” Massie said.
