7. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Lin Jian, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson:
“The US keeps politicizing and instrumentalizing economic and technological issues, overstretching the concept of national security on the issue, continuously tightening export controls on Chinese chips, and coercing other countries to suppress China’s semiconductor industry. Such practices hinder the development of the global semiconductor industry and will ultimately backfire, harming others and itself.”

STORYLINE:
China on Tuesday said it has lodged a “stern protest” with Canada and the European Union for adding more Chinese entities to their latest sanctions package against Russia.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced new sanctions on Monday targeting 76 individuals and entities for providing dual-use items to Russia, including more than 20 from China.

On the same day, the EU rolled out targeted restrictive measures on an additional 48 individuals and 35 entities, including a Chinese firm specialized in producing satellite imagery, for actions the EU said were “undermining or threatening” Ukraine’s sovereignty.

In Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian denounced the sanctions, saying they “lack a basis in international law and come without authorization of the UN Security Council.”

Lin called the measures taken by Canada “unreasonable and erroneous” and urged the EU to “stop smearing and shifting blame onto China without factual basis.”

Additionally, Lin accused the US of “politicizing” economic and technology issues following reports the Trump administration is drafting tougher restrictions on China’s semiconductor industry.

“Such practices hinder the development of the global semiconductor industry and will ultimately backfire,” Lin said.

The US has reportedly approached its allies, such as Japan and the Netherlands, to escalate their restrictions, including preventing their chipmakers from sending engineers to China for semiconductor gear maintenance, according to media reports.

Separately, Lin dismissed the report that Taiwan is investigating a Chinese-crewed ship suspected of severing an undersea communications cable, saying he was not aware of the issue and it did not pertain to diplomacy.

Taiwan’s coast guard intercepted the Togolese-flagged cargo ship, Hongtai, in waters between its main island’s west coast and the outlying Penghu Islands early Tuesday.
