"Today, Apple held it’s annual shareholder meeting and on the agenda was a proposal for the company to scrap its diversity program, basically it’s DEI program, and that proposal, at management’s urging, was rejected by the shareholders."

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Michael Liedtke, The Associated Press:
"Apple had its annual shareholder meeting and this gives shareholders an opportunity to ask management questions, but it also gives an opportunity for shareholders to make various proposals and change in corporate policy. And part of the agenda today, Apple had its annual meeting today, and part of the agenda for Apple was a proposal from a conservative, a self-described conservative think tank that wanted Apple to scrap it’s DEI program. It’s the corporate diversity program, which have been all-in-vogue the last few years, but now the big trend is to get rid of them, right? And a lot of that has to do with who’s president right now because President (Donald) Trump does not like them."

9. SOUNDBITE (English) Michael Liedtke, The Associated Press:
"And so the proposal was for Apple, you need to get rid of this. You’re taking unnecessary legal risks, shareholders don’t like legal risk. Apple, however, believes that it’s a diversity program is much needed and is an integral part of a culture that has made it the most valuable company in the world at $3.7 trillion. And they stood by it, even though there is pressure in a lot of companies, a wide range of companies have been getting rid of them."

11. SOUNDBITE (English) Michael Liedtke, The Associated Press:
"Apple is kind of in, is going against the grain by standing by its DEI program because many companies, seeing how court rulings are going and also what the Trump administration wants, have been getting rid of their DEI programs. That includes a list of retailers like Target, but also includes some of Apple’s own peers in the technology industry, like Facebook and Instagram owner Meta Platforms scrapped its DEI program. Google is scaling way back it’s commitment on DEI."

13. SOUNDBITE (English) Michael Liedtke, The Associated Press:
"I would personally be surprised if there’s a big backlash against Apple from the Trump administration about this. You never know. But generally, I think that President Trump kind of likes Apple and the the money they put into the United States."
