“The Vatican said the Pope had a good night here at the Gemelli hospital and is resting. He is in the 10th-floor apartment dedicated to Popes here. He is suffering from pneumonia in both his lungs. They said yesterday that blood tests showed he had early, mild kidney failure. This, after a respiratory crisis on Saturday. He is now using a tube through his nose to get oxygen constantly. The Vatican said despite all these difficulties, he did attend mass in the chapel that is part of his suite yesterday and is alert. People continue to come here below the statute of John Paul II to light candles for Pope Francis and to pray for him. He has been here now 11 days. He came on February 14th with a bronchitis, but things have gotten considerably worse and it is a very complex situation, doctors say. “

STORYLINE:
The Vatican says Pope Francis is resting after a quiet night.

Monday is the 10th day of his hospitalisation for a complex lung infection that has provoked the early stages of kidney insufficiency.

The one-line statement didn’t say if Francis, 88, had woken up.

“The night passed well, the pope slept and is resting,” it said.

Late Sunday, doctors reported that blood tests showed early kidney failure that was nevertheless under control.

They said Francis remained in a critical condition but that he hadn’t experienced any further respiratory crises since Saturday.
