2. SOUNDBITE (English) David Derevlianyi, 21, local resident:
"We need to understand that we need to fight not only in the wartime, but, if possible if it would happen, to stay united in peacetime. Because everything that Russia does here is trying to mock our people and to disunite the community. Not only here, look at Romania, look at Germany, look at all the states across Europe and even at the United States. So we need to keep fighting for our country, for this yellow and blue flag, for all our community and for all the free world that we have."

4. SOUNDBITE (Ukrainian) Viktoriia Ilkovych, 31, lecturer of Kyiv National University:
"Let’s be honest, first of all, the war has gone on for 11 years already. Secondly, there is no reason to freeze (the war) because it will be worse for us, considering the fact that we won’t get any rest. During this time Russia most likely will build up its military power and it will be ready for what they weren’t ready in 2022. They hoped that we will give up faster. So it will be worse for us. Therefore, the question of stopping the war is probably a no, because at the moment, in the short term, it is a plus, but in the long term, it is a huge minus for us, given that we will most likely completely lose our statehood. "

6. SOUNDBITE (Ukrainian) Karyna Bui, 18, history student at Kyiv National University:
"It seems to me that (the situation in the country) is the worst in all these three years. First, I understand that the morale in society is not the same, there is so little trust that people who can leave the country are leaving it. They are building their lives abroad. And it seems to me that truly the strongest people will stay here and those are the people who will be able to completely lift our country up in the future. "

STORYLINE:
As dozen leaders from Europe and Canada visited Ukraine’s capital Monday to mark the third anniversary of the country’s war with Russia, residents of Kyiv shared their views of the situation amid deepening uncertainty about the Trump administration’s commitment to helping it fend off Russia’s invasion.

The U.S. leader has sought to follow through on his campaign promises to end the war quickly, though his methods for doing so have alarmed many in Ukraine and Europe who believe that his approach is too conciliatory toward Russia and its president, Vladimir Putin.

Leaders across the EU, fearing both that Trump’s approach to Ukraine would lead to an unfavorable settlement for Kyiv and that they — among Ukraine’s most important supporters — would be sidelined in negotiation for peace, have rushed to assert their own response to the rapidly shifting environment.

Viktoriia Ilkovych, a lecturer at Kyiv National University, told The Associated Press that ending the war would be worse for Ukraine as it would allow Russia time to "build up its military power and be ready for what they weren’t in 2022," when Ukraine was invaded by Russian troops.

"In the short term, it is a plus, but in the long term, it is a huge minus for us, given that we will most likely completely lose our statehood," she added.
