7. SOUNDBITE (English) Sheikh Suleiman Gani, Imam at Purley Masjid:
"The atmosphere is really powerful. Imagine if people coming to the masjid and the number of the worshippers are ever on the increase in the month of Ramadan. You already can feel that sense of excitement and joy as the Prophet peace be upon him said, for the fasting person, there are two types of happiness. Two times may you will feel really, you know, overwhelmed with great happiness is when he’s about to break his fast. So you are waiting and you are making your prayer and you see the food in front of you. You see the samosas and you’re getting that excitement and the joy and you know you are about to break your fast with dates. And the Sunnah (teachings of the Prophet Muhammed) is to break into dates and water. That is really a time of happiness."

9. SOUNDBITE (English) Imad Ahmed, Director of New Crescent Society at Royal Observatory Greenwich:
"There is some level of uncertainty about the (Islamic) calendar and it’s coded into the calendar. But one of the nice things about the calendar, therefore, is that it keeps us connected to the moon, and it keeps us connected to nature. You can’t rely on your clock. You can’t rely on your mobile phone. You can’t rely on a printed calendar. You have to actually look for the moon every single month. And that keeps us connected to the moon and keeps us connected to the heavens and keeps us connected to the community actually, because we’re going to go out and look for the moon together."
