Pope Francis was conscious but still receiving high flows of supplemental oxygen on Sunday following a respiratory crisis and blood transfusions, as he remains in critical condition with a complex lung infection, the Vatican said.
Pilgrims in Assisi say they are praying for the pontiff, who chose the name Francis after St. Francis of Assisi, who is known to his followers for embracing poverty and simplicity.
STORYLINE:
Pilgrims flock to Assisi an Umbrian hill town, birthplace of St Francis.
The saint is revered for his decision to renounce a wealthy lifestyle to found the Franciscan order of friars in 1209.
Saint Francis of Assisi embraced a life of poverty and simplicity and often went out in the countryside to preach a message of joy and peace to the rural poor.
In 2013 Jorge Bergoglio, the Argentine Jesuit became the first-ever pope to have named himself after the 13th century friar.
Franciscan friar Fra’ Giulio Cesareo says that he was amazed when the new Pope announced that he would be known as Francis : "Twelve years when Pope Francis on the balcony of St Peter’s Square announced his name as Francis, I was in Rome I was watching the TV and I was speechless, really speechless.
