4. SOUNDBITE (English) Sandra Lynes Timbrell, St Paul’s Cathedral director of visitor engagement:
"All of the artwork and the music is inspired by the history of St Paul’s. There’s been a building on this site since 600. And so Peter (Luxmuralis artist) has been spending some time in the archive. We’ve got images of manuscripts, we’ve got a sound recording of some music of the dean reading from the gospel. And we have some archive footage also from the Second World War. We’re celebrating, we’re commemorating the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War this year. So we have some archive material from that too. So it’s a real, it’s a really broad piece that celebrates the history of Saint Paul’s Cathedral."

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Peter Walker, Luxmuralis lead artistic director:
"It’s obviously a great place to present work, but I think what’s most important is how these buildings are opening up. How work like this, which is using contemporary media, allows us to present artwork that fits with today’s audiences. And the cathedral, by doing that, is bringing its art historical context forward. Working with Luxmuralis we’re able then to use that art historical relationship with the past, bring it forward, use contemporary media, but present it to a modern audience. And I think when the audience comes in, we’re going to introduce the cathedral to new people. And I think that’s what makes this project really special, is having contemporary media here in the building, but continuing that art history."

STORYLINE:
London’s iconic St. Paul’s Cathedral will be illuminated with a majestic sound and light show, taking visitors on an historical journey through the buildings’ centuries of history.

In partnership with Luxmuralis, St Paul’s Cathedral runs the artwork "Luminous" from February 22 to 28.

"All of the artwork and the music is inspired by the history of St Paul’s," said Sandra Lynes Timbrell, St Paul’s Cathedral director of visitor engagement.

Officially completed in 1711, Wren’s massive Portland Stone cathedral — inspired by St. Peter’s in Rome — sits atop Ludgate Hill in London’s financial district.

Its huge dome can be seen from miles away, and by law, no new buildings are allowed to block the view from several distant vantage points.

During World War II, its survival during night after night of German bombing became a symbol of London’s endurance.

The cathedral has been the site of numerous state events, including the wedding of Prince Charles, now the king, and Diana Spencer in 1981, and the funerals of former prime ministers Winston Churchill, in 1965, and Margaret Thatcher, in 2013.
