3. SOUNDBITE (German) Olaf Scholz, German Chancellor:
"We need a strong European Union, otherwise we will not be able to cope with many new powers in a world of so many billions of people. And that is why it is very, very clear to me that it is a top priority for German policy to make Europe a success. However, the EU is fully competent and capable of acting on the issue that will perhaps challenge us the most in the coming weeks and months with regard to our relationship with the USA, namely trade. We can respond to any tariff with our own tariff in practically no time at all and can decide whether we think it’s right or not, because we have a larger economy as the European Union when taken as a whole, than the USA."

5. SOUNDBITE (German) Olaf Scholz, German Chancellor:
"In the end, cast your vote for the SPD, for the constituency here, for me and in this case quite simply with the second vote, also for me and the SPD as a whole, so that we get a strong mandate in Germany and don’t get angry afterwards about how everything is going. Thank you very much."

STORYLINE:
The contenders in Germany’s election made their final appeals to voters Saturday, with current leader Chancellor Olaf Scholz calling for a strong European Union at an event in Potsdam, which he represents in parliament.

Germans are electing a new parliament Sunday after a campaign focused on the state of Europe’s biggest economy and calls to curb migration, while uncertainty has grown rapidly about the future of Ukraine and the strength of Europe’s alliance with the United States.

Scholz’s appearances have done little to shift his party’s position in the polls, which consistently show the center-right opposition Union bloc in the lead.

The far-right anti-immigration Alternative for Germany is on course for the strongest result for a far-right party since World War II, but has no other party willing to go into government with it.

Scholz’s center-left Social Democrats have shown little sign of coming back from a large poll deficit after the chancellor’s three-party coalition collapsed in November following a long-running argument about how to revitalize the economy.

That led to the election being held seven months ahead of schedule.
